If you’ve ever left a doctor’s appointment with “everything looks normal” on your lab report — but you still feel exhausted, foggy, or just off — you’re not imagining it. Standard blood panels don’t test for most minerals, and they completely miss what’s stored in your tissue. That’s exactly the gap OligoScan fills.
MyThrivelytics brings OligoScan mineral testing to Rockville, MD, serving clients from Bethesda, Silver Spring, Germantown, Potomac, and Washington DC.
What is OligoScan?
OligoScan is a non-invasive scanning technology that uses spectrophotometry — light-based analysis — to measure mineral and heavy metal levels stored in your palm tissue. A small sensor is placed on four points of your hand. The scan takes about two minutes. Results appear on screen immediately.
Unlike a blood test, which measures what’s currently circulating in your bloodstream, OligoScan reads what’s stored in your tissue over time. This is why it often finds deficiencies that standard panels miss — especially intracellular minerals like magnesium, which rarely show up as low in blood even when your body is depleted.
What does OligoScan test for?
A full OligoScan session at MyThrivelytics tests for 20+ essential minerals and 14 heavy metals, including:
- Energy and cellular function: Magnesium, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Silicon
- Structural and metabolic minerals: Calcium, Potassium, Sodium, Iron, Zinc, Copper
- Immunity and thyroid support: Selenium, Iodine, Chromium, Manganese
- Heavy metals: Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Aluminum, and 9 more
Each mineral is rated as Optimal, Watch, or Action. Every result links to our Elements Library — 57 in-depth mineral profiles you can explore after your session. Your practitioner walks through every result with you in plain English — what it means, what may have caused it, and what to do about it.
What happens during a session?
The full session takes 30 minutes from start to finish. Here’s what to expect:

Why tissue testing vs. blood testing?
Standard blood panels measure what’s circulating in your bloodstream at the moment of the draw. OligoScan measures what’s stored in your tissue — which reflects your body’s longer-term mineral status.
Magnesium is a good example. Only about 1% of your body’s total magnesium is in your blood. The rest is in your cells and tissues. This means a blood test can show “normal” magnesium while your tissue levels are critically depleted. OligoScan reads the tissue — so it finds what blood tests miss.
Common patterns we see at MyThrivelytics
Across our client base, certain mineral patterns show up consistently in the DC Metro area population:
- Low Magnesium + Low Zinc — the most common combination. Often linked to chronic stress, processed foods, and poor sleep. Frequently explains fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and lowered immunity.
- Elevated Mercury — common in clients who eat tuna, swordfish, or other high-mercury fish frequently. Often a surprise finding.
- High Calcium + Low Magnesium — a calcium-magnesium ratio imbalance associated with muscle tension, anxiety, and disrupted sleep.
- Low Selenium + Low Zinc — often present with thyroid symptoms and lowered immune function.
